Hierbei gehen sie von der Methodik der „diminished subtypes“ von Collier und Levitsky aus. Die defekte Demokratie wird als „unvollständiger“ Subtyp definiert. Um dies zu präzisieren, werden defekte Demokratien in vier weitere Subtypen unterschieden (vgl. Merkel et al. 2003: S.291).
